Getting A Solid Internet Marketing Foundation

As we look at building our online businesses, many of us acknowledge, early-on, that we don’t know it all. Those who don’t, are almost certain to fail because they often attempt to apply techniques that simply don’t work online - to their online businesses. The quickest way to online success is to model those who are already successful at what you want to do. It’ s that simple.

Of all of the chores involved in building your business, marketing is usually the most critical. Poor marketing is also the reason so many businesses fail. You need to learn to properly market your business or hire someone else to do it for you. I’ll give you a few recommended resources to help jumpstart your education in a minute.

A second extremely important skill that goes hand-in-hand with marketing is generating publicity. You can have the greatest product in the world, but if no one knows about it, it may as well not exist. If no one knows about you, then you won’t make any sales!

Let’s look at generating publicity first…

Publicity can take many forms, and they often overlaps what many would define as marketing. For today, I want you to focus on the most effective, and often cheapest, publicity. In fact, this great publicity is often free. What we’re talking about here is publicity generated by getting the media and others talking about you and your business. We’re talking about the publicity typically generated through tools such as press releases and doing media interviews.

Why is the above type of publicity so powerful? It’s so powerful because people believe what others say about you MORE than they believe what you say about yourself. So when you can get magazines, newspapers, television and radio personalities, and even online ezines talking about you, those hearing this buzz believe it more and are therefore more likely to go check you out.

A second reason this type of publicity is so powerful is because you can literally generate millions of dollars in free publicity if you know what you are doing. You may not be able to afford a full-page ad in a major magazine or newspaper. However, let the right person know about your story and that same publication will be all to happy to tell the world about you… and give them your website url and/or your toll-free phone number.

When I first met her, and she sent me an intro package, it felt like Christmas :-)

So we’ll let Annie turn you into a “media darling.” Then you can focus on learning marketing. This is where most online business people should probably spend 80% of their time - not on all of the busywork that you can get someone else to do. The highest and best use of your time is probably in marketing your business, not making webpage updates, writing or even creating products. You can get freelancers to do this for you very inexpensively at places like Elance.com

Marketing is nothing more than communicating the benefits of your products or services effectively to your ideal customer. It all hinges upon effective communications, and your communications can be greatly improved if you understand how and why we interact the way we do with each other. To get a firm grasp on that topic I recommend that you read the book, “Influence, The Psychology of Persuassion,” by Dr. Robert Cialdini.

You’ll never be the same after you’ve read and digest this book. If you’re like me you’ll find yourself reading it over and over! You can find this book at online bookstores.

Another solid book on marketing is Jay Abraham’s “Mr. X” book. This 376 page book distills several decades of the marketing know-how of Jay Abraham. The full title of the book is “Money-Making Secrets of Marketing Genius Jay Abraham And Other Marketing Wizards - A No-Nonsense Guide To Great Wealth and a Personal Fortune.” This book is so good that you could devote six month just to studying the one book, and you’d understand more about marketing than 95% of your competitors.

This book is marketed by the Abraham Marketing Group, but Internet marketers working with the group run specials from time to time. Just watch your email for one of these specials.

A course that I recommend that isn’t just on marketing but on developing the proper mindset is by Dr. Robert Anthony. It’s called “Know How To Be Rich.” In order to run a really successful business, you need to properly train your mind. Many people actually need to give themselves permission to be successful. You’ll notice that none of the resources just recommended were specifically Internet-marketing-only resources. That’s because internet marketing is just an offshoot of marketing, and most of the principles are the same. Most Internet marketers who are struggling, don’t have a good grasp of the over-riding basic marketing principles. That’s what the above resources will provide.

Without website traffic, your website basically has the same results as a billboard on a highway that no one travels. It produces no results because no one sees it. So you do need to learn how to generate traffic. For that I recommend the very indepth, crash course offered by John Reese’s Traffic Secrets. I’ve personally gone through the 13 CD’s and DVD ROM’s, and 3 manuals - TWICE.

It’s a little expensive, but well worth it if you USE what he teaches. If you aren’t going to use it, then you should save your money.

If you work your way through the above resources you’ll be well on your way to building a massively successful online business. None of these resources are something you give a quick glance and then the magic happens. They all require effort. Put in the effort now and you’ll have a very solid foundation upon which to build your Internet marketing business. By understand basic marketing, and then how the internet differs, you’ll possess some very powerful, rarely mastered knowledge.

Boosting Search Engine Visibility with Press Releases

Any individual or organization can be like the big boys and issue press releases. They are an effective publicity tool, and with the rise of the internet, an online press release can be seen by many people and enhance the visibility and traffic to your website.

There are many online venues for distributing press releases to the vast online audience. In fact, many companies even offer free distribution of press releases on the internet. Such companies like PRWeb www.prweb.com and PRLeap www.prleap.com collect press release submissions onto their websites and then market the endless stream of information to journalists and other online publications. These distribution companies also gladly offer RSS feeds in a variety of categories that any website owner can use. These companies make their money by selling advertising on their high traffic sites and by soliciting paid services from the people and organizations submitting press releases.

The paid services offer enhanced distribution to subscribing journalists along with better placement among the hundreds of press releases that can be posted on any given day. However, even opting for the free distribution has many advantages. Readers and users of the content at the distribution company will feel free to take the content of your press release and publish it elsewhere on the net because web publishers and bloggers are always looking for fresh content. This has the effect of spreading information about your company around the internet along with links back to your website as long as you included your website in the press release. Readers of your press release will often even click through to your website from the press release if your news is compelling to them.

Along with having people reading about your company and visiting your website, the distribution of your information and links on the internet increases the visibility of your content and web address to search engines.

Issuing online press releases also gets your company’s messages and news items into the editorial content of other websites. Just like in the print and broadcast worlds, having your message appearing as editorial content in online media allows it to be read more often than advertising as well as being cheaper than advertising. Press releases, when used in conjunction with advertising, are also building name recognition for your organization and legitimacy, which will increase the power of your other marketing messages.

And of course a big advantage could come from an online press release when a reporter actually calls to do a story about your company. This basically can’t happen unless you are using press releases as part of your publicity efforts.

Search Engine Marketing - What Does It Take To Rank These Days

Intro.

Search engine marketing has changed so drastically over the past few years, that one wonders where it may be heading next. Currently, Google, Yahoo, and MSN search engine host 95% of all searches done online, and there doesn’t seem to be any signs of serious changes. But what can we do to rank highly in them consistently?

One-way links
It seems that inter-site linking is all the rage, and most know that just exchanging links with random websites will not get you the rankings you want, and they are right. The days of exchanging links with any and every website out there are over, and have been over for sometime. One is better off identifying their niche, and focusing on obtaining one-way links from websites and directories. This can be done in a variety of ways such as:

  • Writing articles and submitting them to directories
  • Submitting your website to top directories such as joeant and skaffe
  • Giving away free information with the stipulation the user link to where they got the material, which is you
  • Actively participating in forums that match your products, and niche
  • Start a blog and keep it updated

Tags

Fortunately, there are head tags that still work over all search engines. The title tag, and the description tag. The meta keyword tag no longer matters in Google, and Yahoos search engines too much, though they are still weighted by msn. Msn actually likes this tag quite a bit, so I would recommend still using your keyphrases in this head tag.

Keywords

When first starting out, Its best to start with smaller keyphrases then move in to larger ones. This will get you traffic, and keep you afloat, while you go for the bigger ones. Not only that, it gives you sense of accomplishment, and keeps you moving forward. This is very important, as many people get stuck in a rut after about 3-4 months with no rankings, and give up. It’s important to start small. Not only to pay bills, but to keep you going in the right direction.

Link Exchanges

Yes, link exchanges still work. Believe it. Though there are quality standards these days.

  • Only exchange link with websites that are in your general niche market. For example, if had a fishing related website, I would not want to exchange links with a cleaning service website.
  • Do not exchange with website with a single page link directory, with 200 links on it. First off, Google only indexes the first 100 links on each page, and secondly, these types of sites are starting to be punished by Google, Yahoo.
  • Only exchange with a website that has a clearly defined link directory, that is broken down into categories, and is linked from their homepage.
  • Do not exchange with websites that have a grey bar, when using the Google toolbar. This indicates they have been punished by Google, and for linking to them, you could in turn be punished.

Keep at it
This could quite possibly be the key to ranking for competitive phrases. You have to stay positive, and keep working steady, everyday. This of course, comes with the stipulation that you have identified the best keyphrases for your site, and are confident of your ability. Rankings do not happen overnight, and for more competitive phrases, might not happen within the year. This is the harsh truth, but, with the right knowledge, and strict work ethics, you can certainly achieve the success you expect online.
